A truly democratic emerging technology
One day, an early Homo Sapien must have noticed that something very heavy could be moved much more easily when rolled along on a tree trunk, rather than it just being pulled across rough ground. This understanding probably inspired the invention of the wheel.
It’s almost certainly no exaggeration to state that people comprehending the utility of ‘Blockchain’ might be seen as equally important to the future of how human society will function. Once that ‘Eureka Moment’ occurs, one’s outlook is changed forever. Blockchain is basically a huge electronic system, upon which one can build applications. Crucially, however, it is an absolutely democratic system, owned by no-one and almost certainly the most secure ‘operating system’, if it can be called that, ever devised.
Blockchain is a form of mass-distributed ‘ledger’ or ‘decentralised database’ that keeps records of digital transactions. To understand its potential utility, we need to examine a brief history of commerce.
Up until now, people have needed institutions such as governments, banks and ‘official’ third parties to ensure that peer-to-peer contracts can be transacted. Centuries ago, the printing of paper or coin money by monarchies and governments existed to produce a universal currency; cash soon replaced beads, knives and goats as a trading medium.
Hundreds of years later, cash is now rapidly being superseded by electronic transactions, but whichever database for those transactions is always held by a particular organisation, for example a large corporate bank. That database owner is very much in charge of the transactional process, so there is clearly an opportunity for them to make a profit. That institution’s server might have multiple back-ups, but crucially a master version of it exists somewhere, which is accessible *only* by those with designated privileges. By its very nature, this form of data storage can be hacked.
Enter Blockchain. The technical explanation of how it works and updates itself every few minutes is vastly too complex to explain here, but think of it as simply an ‘internet of data blocks’ in an ever growing chain. The entire chain is continually updated, almost in real time, so that every instance of a ‘ledger entry’ in the network is the same, giving each member the ability to prove who owns what at any given time. This ledger could involve money, physical property, artistic copyright, or whatever; but its seminal utility is that it removes the need for intermediaries like banks and governments to hold centralised records.
This also brings unprecedented security benefits. For example—if someone wanted to hack into a particular block in a blockchain, they would not only need to hack into that specific block, but all of the proceeding blocks going back the entire history of that blockchain. Blockchain is currently used as the ‘operating system’ for the internet currency ‘Bitcoin’, however the implications for its much wider use could be equally liberating and disruptive. The implications could shake the foundations of industries that rely on intermediaries: banking, insurance, finance, academia, real estate, the land registry, welfare benefit payments and the public sector—amongst many others.
Undoubtedly this will result in job losses and the complete transformation of entire industries; as every human being on the planet with internet access will have equal access to The Blockchain.
Capitalism as we know it, and by consequence, the entire fabric of our society, will change irrevocably. Just as that rolling tree trunk inspired the wheel, data democratisation and secure transactional freedom will almost certainly have a similar impact on the dynamism of our society.
